Frequently asked questions

The questions our sales team hears most often – with solid answers and the standards behind them.

Dimensions, weight, load capacity, exchange, export, lead time

What are the dimensions of a euro pallet?

A euro pallet measures 1,200 × 800 × 144 mm and has a footprint of 0.96 m². It can be picked up from all four sides, which makes it a four-way pallet. The WORLD pallet is produced exclusively in this size to EN 13698-1.

How much does a euro pallet weigh?

A new euro pallet weighs roughly 22 to 25 kg, depending on the residual moisture of the timber. Kiln-dried pallets below 20 % residual moisture sit at the lower end of that range.

What load can a WORLD pallet carry?

Supported in racking or on the forks of an industrial truck, the following nominal loads apply: 1,200 kg for a freely distributed load, 1,700 kg for an evenly distributed load and 2,200 kg for a compact load resting uniformly across the full deck. In full-surface stacking the bottom pallet carries up to 6,000 kg.

What does MFH capability mean?

MFH is the German abbreviation for machine-handling capable, conveyor-compatible and suitable for high-bay racking. Falkenhahn AG gives a 100 % quality guarantee on these properties for every pallet leaving the plant, backed by fully automatic contour measurement of each individual pallet.

Can WORLD euro pallets be exchanged?

Yes. WORLD euro pallets comply with EN 13698-1 and are classified according to GS1 quality classes A, B and C. The open euro pallet exchange pool has no access conditions – WORLD euro pallets are exchanged there like any other pallet that meets the standard. Fitting RFID transponders does not exclude them either: the transponder sits invisibly inside the block and changes neither dimensions nor construction.

In the open pool no brand owner steers the exchange. The neutral, cross-industry platform for it is the Competence Center for Returnable Transport Items (CC MTV) at GS1 Germany; Falkenhahn AG is a member. Exchange is left to the market to regulate – there is no legal obligation to exchange, for WORLD or for any other brand.

If a partner insists on a particular brand, that is an agreement between the parties, not a requirement of the standard. Whether exchange or resale pays off for you depends on volume, circulation and handling; the logistics concept sets both models side by side with a cost calculator. How the open pool works is explained on the euro pallet exchange pool page.

What is the difference between WORLD, EPAL and EUR?

In the euro pallet itself, none. WORLD, EPAL and EUR are three brands of the same pallet: the euro pallet to EN 13698-1. All three meet the same technical requirements – 800 × 1,200 × 144 mm, four-way flat construction, nine blocks, eleven boards, nominal loads as set by the standard. The open euro pallet exchange pool has no access conditions anyway – it is open to any pallet that meets the standard, whatever brand it carries. The difference lies not in the product but in the brand system behind it.

EUR is the older mark from the licence system of the European railways. EPAL is the licence system of the European Pallet Association. WORLD is the euro pallet brand of Falkenhahn AG: we produced under EPAL licence for 16 years and secured the exclusive licence rights for the WORLD euro pallet in Europe in 2008, to align ourselves with international markets. CHEP and LPR also operate here, but they are rental pool systems with their own return logistics – a different proposition.

In the open pool no brand owner can steer the exchange – a pallet that meets the standard is exchanged there whatever brand it carries. There is no legal obligation to exchange in any case; what that means in practice is set out on the euro pallet exchange pool page.

What the WORLD euro pallet can show beyond that. It is type-examined by TÜV Rheinland and externally monitored by TÜV Thüringen, production is certified to ISO 9001, and every single pallet goes through 100 % contour measurement. It carries its own GTIN (4059214999934) and is registered under GS1 asset type 99993.

What does a euro pallet cost?

The price depends on quantity, quality, drying and delivery location. For a firm figure we need your annual volume, the specification required and the delivery address – you will receive a binding quote within 24 hours on working days.

Do I need ISPM 15 treatment for export?

For shipments to many non-EU countries, yes. On request we supply the WORLD pallet as an export pallet to the IPPC standard ISPM 15. This kills all parasites and insects present in the wood, in particular the sirex woodwasp. Falkenhahn AG is authorised for this treatment under registration number DE-TH1-490409.

How quickly can you deliver?

We permanently keep several days of production in stock – with an annual capacity of 10 million pallets and more than 80,000 m² of storage space. Orders are drawn from stock rather than from the running production line, which is what makes just-in-time delivery possible.

What does the PPWR mean for pallets?

The EU packaging regulation PPWR – Regulation (EU) 2025/40 – applies directly in every member state from 12 August 2026 and replaces packaging directive 94/62/EC. Pallets count explicitly as transport packaging. Reuse and repairability – and the ability to evidence both – therefore move to the front. The details are set out on the PPWR and pallets page.

Is the WORLD pallet PPWR-compliant?

Compliance always rests on the packaging system as a whole, not on the load carrier alone – the assessment therefore sits with whoever places it on the market. What the WORLD pallet brings: it is designed as a reusable pallet to DIN EN 13698-1, standardised and therefore replaceable, classifiable against the GS1 criteria and repairable under licence. The properties the regulation looks for are built in.

How do I evidence the rotations of a reusable pallet?

Through unambiguous identification of the load carrier. Our WORLD RFID pallets carry two UHF transponders in the corner blocks; they can be read without line of sight, even in stacks, and the data transfers into the ERP system. Anyone working with them today has the record before it is needed.

Can I buy used euro pallets from Falkenhahn AG?

Yes. Alongside our own production we trade in used euro pallets in quality classes A, B and C under the GS1 classification. Tell us the class, the quantity and the delivery address and you will have a quote within 24 hours on working days. What each class means is set out on the quality classes page.

Which quality class do I need?

It depends on whether the pallet runs through machinery. For automated high-bay racking and conveyor systems, class A or B applies – both are machine-handling capable, conveyor-compatible and suitable for high-bay racking. For storage and transport without machine contact, class C is usually sufficient; there the MFH capability is not guaranteed. If in doubt we will advise you on the basis of your process.

What do used euro pallets cost?

The price depends on quality class, quantity and delivery address, and moves with the timber market. We therefore only commit in a quote – which you receive within 24 hours on working days. For the comparison with new pallets, see the logistics concept.

Can pallets be repaired?

Yes. The WORLD pallet is designed as a returnable pallet; the licence covers production and repair worldwide. Repairability is also a central argument under the new EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation.
